MODERNIST PAVILLION TO GET THE OSC TREATMENT
A collaborative pitch between offsite specialist Framework CDM and award winning architects Sjölander da Cruz has won the commission to design and build a Resource Centre for the young people of Neston, near Ellesmere Port, Cheshire.
The teams challenging design, based on a modernist pavilion, combines simple, yet striking architecture in a welcoming and functional layout. Featuring an expansive front portal entrance, the new building with its bold graphics and colour scheme has been designed specifically to appeal to youngsters.
Following their successful collaboration at the Bicton Primary School scheme, Framework selected Sjölander da Cruz to partner with them on the project. Having seen at firsthand how the innovative and versatile Framework solution can be used, Sjölander da Cruz were the ideal partners to realize the maximum potential from the system. Based around a series of roof, wall and floor cassettes which are factory manufactured and then delivered to site for fast track building construction, the system provides an efficient method creating buildings.
Due to its versatility virtually any design can be created. This has seen the creation of a generous height, single storey building, with an unusual folding plane roof shape that overhangs to create inside / out areas. Internally, the building has been designed to provide large uninterrupted multifunctional areas.
An important element of the design was to cause minimal disruption to the site, with none of the established trees removed or damaged. As such, the building has been designed so that it nestles amongst the trees. In turn, these trees will offer passive solar shading over the southwest elevation of the building.
The building has also been designed to feature extensive glazing to provide natural lighting. The glazing also allow occupants of the building to see the immediate landscaped external surroundings and, at night, passersby will be able to see the illuminated activities taking place inside.
Marco da Cruz, Director of Sjölander da Cruz Architects commented, ”The brief for the resource centre was challenging, given the tight timescale and budget, but we were convinced that an architecturally exciting solution was possible. Using the flexibility of the Framework panel system we have been able to express the envelope of the centre as a continuous folded plane, which is complimented by a simple glazing and signage zone that emphasizes the canopy overhangs at either end of the building. This means the building can be open and welcoming, allowing it to connect with its target audience and provide the young people of Neston with a facility that is second to none”.
The project is due to be completed in just 21 weeks.
